
3:14 p.m., Tuesday. Stormy day, rain showers off and on. Lots of heavy cloud action overhead as Gabe and I walk home after his school. This makes me think of the “Cloud Formations” section in The Dangerous Book for Boys (p. 112). Our goal is not just to read about the various cloud formations but to see and identify them much as a birder makes a “life list” of all the birds he has spotted in his bird-watching career.
When we reach home we run inside and grab a camera to record the moment. Gabe snaps a few pictures just before the skies open up again and drive us inside. We can now strike “cumulonimbus” off our to-do list of clouds, and Gabe thinks we might have seen some stratus mixed up there as well.
